Class Warfare
I was so happy when the school announced that it would finally be getting rid of the stupid practice of class colors. I have been against class colors since I was a freshman and even voiced that opinion to my principal but at the time, she "disagreed that class colors incite discrimination". Of course it does! What's a more obvious way to judge someone superficially than to look at them and see that they've painted their faces red or are completely decked out in black clothing? Class colors, especially for the senior class instill deep biases pro-ingroup and anti-outgroup. Being completely dressed in black and surrounded by your peers creates a sense of anonymity which only leads to poorer decision making skills. I remember what it felt like to be a freshman at the 2009 pep rally. The seniors looked moronic in their frenzy. I watched them as if I were watching National Geographic document the congregation of wild apes. I wasn't particularly harassed but I saw people that were. Is it really worth it? Do we want to continue this cycle of "since I had to go through it when I was a freshman I am going to make the freshman feel how I felt and worse"? It's just so... barbaric! If you didn't like taking it as a freshman, why would you want to dish it as a senior? The most annoying part of it all is that seniors automatically think that because we're all wearing the same colors and against the same people that we have more in common with each other than we do with the other classes. It's simply not true. The people that you will see around you are the same people that used to make fun of your acne in middle school or started that rumor about you that made you want to stay home from school. There is no real bond we share in being seniors besides the fake one that school colors give us. I like some sophomores better than I like some seniors, sue me. I don't think it's fun to generalize an entire group of people, the freshmen, and discriminate against them for being in that group. Before you put on you entirely black outfit this upcoming Friday, please, look at yourself in the mirror and ask yourself, "Why?"
